Raven 1—Mice and Pigs

Raven had been in this tiny, filthy cell long enough to grow tired of it. Really tired. Long enough to give pet nicknames to all the rodents. Fortunately, they were small, timid, and in short supply. Trumped up charges. They never would have caught her if there hadn’t been three of them, and if that one deputy hadn’t clocked her from behind. It doesn’t matter how good you are if someone gets the drop on you like that.

The sheriff and deputies would leer at her from time to time and make crude, threatening comments from the other side of the bars. But they tried no funny business—she glared right at them and said she would bite their manhood right off if they did. She could tell they believed her. They knew she had magical abilities too, which frightened them. They were clever enough to take away all her spell components and chain her hands up, binding her fingers, other than her thumbs, to boot. After that, they never entered the cell. But there wasn’t much she really could have done in a pinch, kicking and biting aside.

The wheels of justice turned slowly here. Three weeks had already passed, and still, no judge had come to town for her case. Aggravated assault. Trespassing. Well, that was accurate. But all the other stuff they added to the list, not so much. She moved a lot for different jobs and sent a message to those city boys that she was heading to Opuntia. Then, after a few days here, she got busted. It was taking them long enough to get up here—the last contact was something like a month before that.

Then Raven heard a noise.
